Teaching Warhammer 40k 10th Ed. to a New Player

This past Sunday I found myself teaching 40k to a new player here at the office. Orks were the canvass and Chaos Demons were the savage medium.

The game was around 890 points (for various reasons), and while one of the players in the game wanted to get bashing in a Stompa, I made sure there was a little bit of everything in both army lists so that almost all the core rules were covered and experienced.

Ork Boyz were torn in half by a Soul Grinder and Nobz waded hip deep into Daemonettes of Slaanesh.

It wasn't the hardest lesson to teach to a person - but 40k can be a challenging memory game to say the least. Because each unit has its own flavor rules on top of detachment rules AND an army rule - things just fall through the cracks from game turn to game turn.

Don't forget the Stratagems!

Still, the primary goal was to see if this new person could get some fun out of this hobby. And it was in this effort I think it was a success.

It remains to be seen if I wrangled in another 40k player for life - or if the new guy will only be firing Storm Bolter rounds at me in passing while on his way to find a hobby that really suits him.

But what I do know is, he was fascinated by the story and the lore as much as the function of the game. That right there might just be good enough.
